Turmeric contains a compound called curcumin that is very popular in natural medicine. In studies, curcumin has been shown to possess anti-carcinogenic effects, anti-inflammatory effects, neuro-protective benefits, and is beneficial for blood sugar and lipid control. Curcumin is anti-inflammatory, in that it can reduce pain and fever, much like Tylenol or Ibuprofen. Curcumin kills several types of cancer cells in the laboratory. In animals, curcumin prevents or slows cancer in the skin, breast, liver, stomach, and colon. Curcumin also has anti-angiogenic properties; translation: curcumin seriously slows new blood vessel formation in tumors, causes asphyxiation of tumors and thus preventing their growth and metastases.
